I thought I’d try and help lift the veil on the intricate and mystical process of producing music. Here’s my studio diary from last week …
6.00pm Great, arrived at Studio and set up. Need to remix these tracks for my EP, time is of the essence and I need to knuckle down and focus. Focus Focus!
6.05pm Run the first track right through, noting spikes and inconsistencies in balance, and nudge the sustain level on the kick drum. Wonder what the footy is tonight?
6.25pm Finish responding to Twitter mentions regarding pointless and unfunny earlier tweets. Focus!
6.28pm … what was I doing again? Oh look someone’s posted a funny video of a cat on Facebook!
6.35pm Right, enough of that, I need to check the gain structure of these layered kick and clap sounds. Also global reverb levels of same and check for frequency crossovers, and if problematic solve with filter tweaks. Also I’m thirsty.
6.40pm Why are there no goddamn drinks machines in this place?
6.55pm Ok well that visit to the shop down the road took a bit longer than I was expecting but no matter, now I have a sandwich and a drink to help me FOCUS!!
7.15pm That sandwich was terrible.
7.25pm Right: let’s try a different tack: hi-hats. Crank up the hi-pass filters and do some ‘creative’ panning. Nice, that’s working pretty well! Time for a break? Actually I could probably nip out and watch the first half of the footy … could do with a pint now I think about it …
7.30pm No no no, FOCUS!!
7.40pm Right … so I probably need to stop playing Angry Birds now really don’t I?
7.45pm Ok. Let’s leave the hi-hats alone for now and solo the main keyboard track, really need to nail the frequency of those deep stabs to get the right percussive knock without too much low-frequency overlap, prob … ooh look the football’s started.
7.56pm That was offside!
7.58pm Hmm, after replay maybe it wasn’t actually.
8.15pm Hang on - I don’t even support either of these teams and don’t care about the result. Switch off and FOCUS!!
8.17pm Right, so what was I doing again?
8.30pm Oh yes, keys. Well … they sound ok to me. Shall I try and fix this bass?
8.40pm Hmm, well, best leave the bass until another time really, after all it IS the hardest to get right.
8.45pm Wonder what the scores are?
8.55pm Oh yes nearly forgot - vocals. Need to equalise, sweeten and place in the mix. Need to get a lot of stuff ready for this process, so I need to begin!
9.00pm Oh hang on - 9pm - that’s my studio time up …
[Two weeks later: label rejects remixes, demands a “more focussed effort”]

Everyone’s commented on the rise of Halloween as a national event recently … and with the last few falling on weekend days it’s been a great excuse for a huge fancy dress party. I guess with the trend for dressing up being a big part of summer festivals it’s more natural for people to make a big effort for their night out. London seems to really come alive over this weekend and reminds me why I love living here so much.
The strange thing is, I have no idea of what Halloween is actually about or what it’s celebrating … and neither does anyone else it seems … which in my book makes it the perfect excuse for a party.
As with last year, I played at a masked Halloween party at one of my very favourite venues, The Brickhouse in Shoreditch. And again it was a great night, a brilliant crowd who were very up for having fun and made a big effort to look fabulous.
I played a set back-to-back with Jimi, who came straight from his latest turn on Strictly Come Dancing along with his dance partner Flavia and some of the crew from the show. They had done their routine to MJ’s Thriller and he was still dressed in character, so to complement the look I wore my Grim Reaper mask … Also playing were four brilliant DJs and great friends of ours: Ryan Bliss and Ryan Styles, Ibiza legend Sam Totolee and Monophunk’s Stevie Chan. There was no official photographer so the pictures below are all a bit rough … hopefully they give some flavour of a great night.
I kept the mask on the following evening when answering the door to children trick-or-treating … which I thought was funny, at least :-)

I’ve now put my ‘Billie Jean’ rework up on SoundCloud as a free download:

Enjoy!
I’ve been privileged to be one of the resident DJs at the tabula rasa parties since they started last summer. They have always been secret, daytime/evening parties with amazing music, courtesy of some awesome guest DJs, and a great, friendly crowd that loves to have a good time. Previously held at the fantastic Brickhouse venue in Brick Lane, the latest was held in a new location - the back terrace of an italian restaurant on Shoreditch High Street.
Sound odd? It was very different, and that really added to the vibe of what turned out to be one of the best parties of the summer. A tiny triangular walled terrace, scaffolding along one side, tarpaulin covering it and with the definition of a makeshift bar and DJ booth. When I arrived just before it opened it was still being built, lending a brilliant DIY feel to the whole thing. Stick in a Funktion One rig and some smart lighting - suddenly we had the best party space in town, bar none.
I played an opening set and then played a bit later alongside Jimi Mistry, in our usual tabula setup. The crowd were great, the sound was awesome and the whole thing went off in the best way possible. Guests Ryan Bliss & Ryan Styles, Matt Tolfrey and Maya Jane Coles, alongside fellow residents Peter O and Chan (Monophunk), all played brilliant sets to provide a perfect soundtrack to the space. Very difficult to capture in pictures and sound, but here’s a clip from behind the decks when I dropped my new ‘Bille Jean’ edit:
and from Matt Tolfrey’s set:
and some random pictures:

No idea when the next party will be, but it’ll be difficult to top that one …
